Believe it or not, the holiday season is the best time to network! With all of the parties, events and social gatherings going on this time of year, it’s the perfect opportunity to reap the benefits of networking.
Make the most of your holiday networking with these simple, yet effective tips:
1. Do Your Homework
Find out who will be attending the event and do your research. Go online, ask colleagues, study up on fellow attendees as you would a test. That way, when you’re introduced to someone you know what they do and how you can be of help to them. And, for those attendees you already know, connect with them prior to the event and let them know you’re looking forward to seeing them.
2. Ask for Introductions
Speaking of being introduced to someone, don’t ever shy away from asking for introductions. Going right up to someone you don’t know can be a bit unnerving, especially if that’s not your thing. So, grab a colleague and ask them to do the intros. This way, you won’t feel awkward and you have an immediate common connection.
3. Respond to Every Invite
If your mailbox is overflowing with invitations, don’t feel you need to attend every single party. Yes, showing up speaks volumes but sometimes it’s just not possible. Choose wisely and attend gatherings that will provide the utmost benefit to your networking opportunities. Remember that although you may not be able to attend every event, make sure you respond and give your “Sorry, I’m unable to attend” notice. Your hosts will appreciate it.
4. Prepare Some Questions
Commit a list of general, easy to remember questions to memory before you step foot in the door. Questions like “How was business this year?” and “What are your holiday plans?” are great for breaking the ice and getting the conversation started. Remember, it’s better to be an excellent listener than a good talker.
5. Follow Up
After the event, you’ll want to follow up with those you met. Send a note or call stating how great it was to meet them and how you’d like to grab a cup of coffee or take them to lunch when business resumes after the holidays. Making solid plans now means you won’t have to try later when things get busy in the new year. Plus, don’t forget to share your Plaxo contact card with those new acquaintances (with your iPhone or Android smartphones)! Sharing your contact card has never been easier this holiday season.
Go deck those halls and get your networking groove on. Enjoy and happy holidays to you!
