Just last week, the Pew Internet & American Life Project issued a report titled, “Smartphone Adoption and Usage” which stated that one third of American adults own smartphones. We at Plaxo strive to stay on top of trends in mobile usage and contact management so we just wrapped up a study, “Mobile, Address Book & Backup Trends” and are excited to share the results with you. Below are some key highlights:
Keeping in the Know While on the Go
As the mega trend to mobile continues, we’re seeing it reach all aspects to our day-to-day lives. This study shows that consumers are increasingly reliant on their smartphones to get in touch with their contacts meaning services like Plaxo, with its mobile apps and capability to integrate multiple address books, will be key.
We’ve got more and more packed onto our smartphones yet that high-tech piece of glass is incredibly vulnerable. Just one slip and its down the drain—literally! For the third of us that have dealt with this situation we know that the biggest hassle is replacing the contacts on your phone. Several Plaxo customers have written to thank us for *saving* this crucial info for them thru our syncing apps—enabling them to get back up and running in minutes.
Mixing Business & Pleasure While on the Go
It wasn’t that long ago that a mobile phone was limited to just business or personal and we all watched how many “minutes” we had left each month.
Our new latest study shows that the walls between those two worlds continue to come down and consumers want access to ALL of their contacts (business and personal) on one device. Plaxo’s latest iOS app enables you to tag contacts into multiple groups enabling you to keep track of all the circles you operate in.
Gen Y is Gen Mobile
As we look at consumers, we’re seeing Gen Y drive the momentum behind these mobile trends. They’re the most likely to be using the cloud and they understand how incredibly valuable those contacts are to them. It’s also not that surprising to me that Gen Y is a very relationship-based generation where social graph often transcends professional and personal relationships.
People Place a Premium on Their Contacts
Rebuilding the list of contacts on your phone is not only a painful waste of time, it often makes you look bad. How embarrassing would it be to have to ask your best customer for their contact info because you lost your phone? What if you missed a key meeting while on the road because your lost phone had the address on it? For those that have gone through this trauma especially, they realize how priceless their address book really is. How much is your address book worth to you?
Spread the Word
We’re excited to bring you results of this new study! Hopefully you will find the study intriguing…and you aren’t one of the 19% who have dropped their phone in the toilet. Although Plaxo can’t replace your smartphone in the event that this happens, we can make recovering your contacts and address book quick and painless. And if you don’t have Plaxo just yet, now may be the time to take a look at how Plaxo can make your life easier.
Share our study with your friends and colleagues. What trends have you been seeing in how people use their smartphones? How are you backing up all of your contacts on your device, in your Web mail, on your laptop, etc? Tell us your horror story and how you handled it.
