Ahoy Scallywags… Get Yer Pirate On !

Since Plaxo has launched it’s Internationalization efforts a few years ago, we continued to listen to the Plaxo community as to what other languages we should offer as we move forward. And with the advent of Plaxo features that will create a smarter, more pervasive socially aware address book for users in the weeks to come, it became obvious what that language should be. Pirate.

Plaxo Pirate Setting

Of course, our inspiration goes back the originators of the International Talk Like A Pirate Day. And maybe they know something we all don’t know – that by applying Pirattitude, you too (in their words) can:

  • Shoot up the corporate ladder with your new found pirate panache.
  • Discover how pirate-hood provides a solid platform for power and political gain.
  • Dive right in to the dangers and delights of dating pirate style.
  • Raise a family—and see how pirate tactics will keep your li’l swabbies in line.
  • Learn how to write your own pirate romance novel. Really, how can you beat that?

To start this voyage to success in life and career, go to your Plaxo account and click Settings | Account Info – then change your language setting to Pirate.

Great. Plaxo’s engineers can’t get their software to work properly on Windows 7, but they have time to create a pirate language add on. I’m sure the folks at Comcast would appreciate knowing that their customers are wasting away while their software team’s screwing around with this waste of time.

I would agree with you wholeheartedly if the Windows toolbar engineering team were writing code solely for pirate language expansion. But it’s a completely different team, completely different timeframe and very different discipline. And throwing more people to fix a problem does not necessarily fix it faster.

We are very committed to the Windows 7 platform – and client engineering team has been hard at work readying a toolbar (currently in alpha) that will be compatible with all flavors of Windows (2000 and later, 32 and 64 bit). As part of that commitment, users who contact our Plaxo Care team (help.plaxo.com) will receive extensions on their Premium subscriptions until the toolbar becomes available.

Aside from developing the new toolbar compatible with Windows 7, there are also ongoing bugs that arise that we need to fix for the majority of Windows users – as an add-on toolbar, we have to “play nice” with other software in your computer (anti-virus, malware detection software, other Outlook add-ons, etc). Those are constantly being upgraded – and each time a new version appears, we have to revise our end.

As for pirate – the translation team used something fun to demonstrate the flexibility of the technology we’ve developed for internationalization. And since it was close to Pirate Day, we thought it would be appreciated by our users – and based on the amount of feedback, it was very well received.

Obviously, we want to earn and keep your loyalty and want you to be our “Customer For Life”. Contact our support group (http://www.plaxo.com/ask) and we’ll take care of you immediately. And if you’re interested, ping me directly if you want to try out the BETA version of the toolbar (redgee at plaxo dot com).
